Over the years, teaching methods have changed. From the usual “chalk and talk” method of teaching to the use of ipads in the classroom scene; some say these transitions are an effect of the changes the kids nowadays adapt and learn in their environment. The question is which teaching method is aimed at improving teaching efficiency? Is it the one that most of us have gotten used to? Or it is high time to say out with the old in with the new? Here are the common differences of Traditional Teaching Method over Technological Teaching Method.
The traditional teaching method, also known as conventional education, is still widely used in schools that aren’t yet technologically aware. The old-fashioned way of teaching was all about recitation. For example students would sit in silence, while one student will be asked by the teacher to solve a certain question or a problem, wherein a student will diligently answer it, the recitation in front of the class won’t end until all of them are called. The old way of “doing it” seems a little bit repetitive and becomes a routine rather than an activity. A study by numerous professors made a table to describe the traditional teaching and it goes as follows:
- Reading texts
- Formulate Questions
- Attending numerous lectures
- Monitor Class Discussions Writing and Reply brief or extensive questions and objective questions
- Solving short and lengthy unstructured problems and cases
- Oral presentation of the topics assigned by the professors
- Answer the questions of your professor as well as your classmates
Some might think that that would be depressing. Unfortunately, many schools, in fact more than half of the schools in the western and asian countries still practice these kind of methods. It is said that these methods best improve attainment of the students and is very efficient. But it is it still effective in this modern age?
Technological Teaching is best defined as the use of technology in the classroom or in some studies defined it as where education and technology meets. Thesis studies have shown how has technology changed education, how technology helps education, the different technology trends in education etc. but what makes this method different from the other? Professors conducted a detailed research about the activities when a teacher uses this type of method. The following are their descriptions:
- Video Watching
- Attendance in class lectures and interacting using their gadgets
- Role Playing
- Practical activities and examinations that deals with day to day events
- Educational technology applications
The activities mentioned are usual things students do when the technology teaching method is applied. A surplus of students and teachers agreed that this type of method works best for them and their students, the reason behind it is that the students adapt to ever changing environment. We live in an age where it is everything is dominantly operated and accessed through technology, if you are a student in this era, that is trying to learn new concepts, most would go for the technological way, wherein they can relate to more.
